Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of searchers who see your page in Google results and actually click on it. It's one of the clearest indicators of how well your title tag and meta description are performing — and it's directly tied to your ranking position.
The top result in Google captures roughly 28% of all clicks for a given query. By position #3, that drops to about 10%, and by position #10 it falls below 2%. This steep curve means moving up even a single position in the top 5 can double your organic traffic — without any changes to your content.
CTR isn't purely about position. Two pages ranked #4 can have very different click rates depending on how compelling their title and description are. A clear benefit-driven title, a strong meta description with a call to action, and matching the search intent exactly can lift CTR significantly — bringing more traffic without needing to outrank anyone.
Studies consistently show that fewer than 1% of searchers click to page 2 of Google results. A page ranking at position 15 receives around 0.7% CTR — compared to 28% at position 1. This is why SEOs prioritize pushing page-2 keywords to the first page before trying to improve already-top-10 rankings.
